Hand-arm vibration syndrome

As is well known, the use of vibrating tools, or the contact with materials subject to vibrations or impacts, may cause a number of neurological and circulation disorders in the fingers, as well as bone and joint lesions in the upper limbs, which are collectively referred to by the term: hand-arm vibration syndrome

The syndrome’s first symptoms are a sensation of discomfort in the hands and joints, including: numbing, pins and needles and limited functional impairments. These symptoms eventually evolve to:

  • Instances of stabbing pains in the hands and arms. In the long term, irreversible damage may occur. The vibration syndrome may damage the capillaries in the fingers and hand (white-finger syndrome), the peripheral nervous system, tendons, muscles, bones and arm joints

  • Damage to the patient’s sense of touch and ability to feel warm and cold surfaces with their fingers

  • Reduction in the hand-grip strength and loss of manual dexterity
